There is an old business adage that “time is money.” Of course, it seems that no one is taking it seriously. Time and time again I meet business owners who are overwhelmed by tasks that having nothing to do with their business or add money to their bottom line. You don’t see quarterbacks handing out water during a football game, do you? That is because he was hired to do one thing and one thing expertly — getting the football across the goal line. Anything that distracts from that is eliminated or delegated to someone else.

Businesses should have the same mindset. Their goal is to achieve the mission and if any task doesn’t support it or doesn’t add to the bottom line, it should be delegated or eliminated. I know this is easier said than done, but in recent years technology has evolved to a point where delegating work to a computer is a viable option.

What’s even better is that this technology is no longer only available to big businesses or requires hordes of developers to create. With products such as Zapier, Microsoft Power Automate, UIPath, and many others. You can quickly find solutions to automate tasks, freeing time up for employees to work on more important tasks such as sales, marketing, and customer satisfaction.

Let me give you an example of what I mean. I met a CFO who had to spend three solid days a month pulling information together and calculating commission. That is 36 days a year to run this one report for a C-level employee! How much time and money is this costing the company? If we assumed she made around $80,000, it is costing them almost $7900 a year to run this report. What’s even worse is that this cost will not go away. I wouldn’t bet that this report gets less complex as time goes on, more likely it will get more complex.

This business is putting its money in the wrong place. Writing reports isn’t what a C-level employee should be doing. And it isn’t adding business value or contributing to the bottom line either. It was time for this business to sit down and see where automation could make savings. They need to stop their CFO from handing out water and back into guiding the business to profitabilty.
